Majority of Canadians Name U.S. Top Threat as Alliance Persists

  • A Pew Research Center survey of 28,333 people in 25 countries finds 59 percent of Canadians identify the United States as their largest threat, compared with 20 percent in 2019.
  • Despite these fears, 55 percent of Canadians continue to regard the United States as their most important ally.
  • President Trump’s calls to make Canada the 51st state and his imposition of steel, aluminum and auto tariffs have been key drivers of shifting Canadian perceptions.
  • In Mexico, 68 percent of respondents view the United States as their primary threat, while 95 percent of Israelis and 89 percent of South Koreans name it their top ally.
  • European nations such as Poland (81 percent) and Sweden (77 percent) cite Russia as their main threat, and majorities in Japan (53 percent) and Australia (52 percent) point to China.
