Majority in Germany Sees Policy Hurting Youth as Student Leaders Press Merz for Talks

Pensions top the list of perceived harms in a new Civey survey of 5,000 adults.

Overview

  • Fifty-one percent of respondents say federal policy is rather to the detriment of younger generations, while 12 percent see a benefit and 31 percent say it is mixed.
  • Among 18–29-year-olds, 79 percent view current policy as harmful to young people.
  • The Civey poll was conducted online Oct. 24–27 among 5,000 adults for Funke media outlets.
  • Youth leaders argue they are being asked to shoulder defense, pension and climate burdens without sufficient influence or investment, and they seek a meeting with Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
  • Pensions were named the top area of harm by 45 percent of respondents, as experts also fault government climate plans and debates continue over service proposals and debt-financed investment.
