Overview

  • Emergency Preparedness Minister Eleanor Olszewski reported over 4,500 wildfires and nearly 7.8 million hectares burned, marking Canada’s second-worst season on record.
  • The Wesley Ridge fire northwest of Nanaimo has been declared under control, leading to the lifting of evacuation orders for 35 properties and alerts for 268 others.
  • The Mount Underwood blaze near Port Alberni remains out of control at roughly 36 square kilometres, cutting off access to Bamfield and leaving about 500 B.C. Hydro customers without power.
  • Nova Scotia’s Long Lake fire has surged to nearly 20 square kilometres with about 100 homes evacuated under a state of emergency, while Newfoundland’s Conception Bay complex spans approximately 95 square kilometres and has destroyed around 100 houses.
  • Federal agencies are coordinating with provincial authorities and the Canadian Armed Forces to deploy personnel, equipment and $540,000 in training funds to support firefighting efforts.
