Major Traffic Disruptions on A81 and A3 Following Accidents

Separate incidents involving a truck and a van caused long delays and temporary closures on German highways.

The A81 Engelbergtunnel near Leonberg was fully closed early Thursday after a truck damaged critical safety systems, including fire alarms and ventilation.
The truck driver, who initially failed to report the accident, is under investigation for hit-and-run; damages to the tunnel are estimated in the low six-figure range.
The A81 reopened earlier than expected by midday, but the closure caused a 10-kilometer traffic jam during the morning rush hour.
Separately, a crash on the A3 near Iggensbach involved a van overturning after a collision during a lane change, leading to hours-long closures and a similar 10-kilometer backlog.
No injuries were reported in either incident, but both caused significant delays and required extensive recovery operations, including the use of heavy equipment like cranes.
