Major Response Stood Down After Swindon Industrial Estate Explosion And Fire

Investigators now lead the scene following overnight containment.

  • An evening blast shortly after 7:30pm on 24 September at Groundwell Industrial Estate on Crompton Road ignited a large warehouse fire.
  • Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue deployed up to 12 engines with specialist vehicles, supported by Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire crews.
  • The industrial estate was evacuated and a wide police cordon remains in place, with Cricklade Road closed between Queensfield and Thamesdown Drive.
  • No casualties have been reported; power isolated for safety was largely restored by around 1am, and a small number of crews are damping down today.
  • Local reporting identifies the affected unit as printing firm ESP Smile, where workers were evacuated safely, and the cause is under investigation.
