Major Airports Decline DHS Video That Blames Democrats for Shutdown

Airport operators say playing the partisan message would violate nonpartisan rules under the Hatch Act and, in Oregon, state law.

Overview

  • Authorities overseeing Seattle, Portland, Phoenix, the New York–area airports, Charlotte, Las Vegas, Cleveland and others said they will not display the 36-second message from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
  • Officials cited facility policies against political content, the federal Hatch Act’s restrictions on partisan activity, and, in Portland’s case, an Oregon statute barring political advocacy by public employees.
  • TSA asked airports to run the video near security lines, but some airports said TSA does not control checkpoint screens or that no request was made, including Charlotte Douglas and Boston Logan.
  • DHS defended the message and said it is being used at other checkpoints, with Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin attributing the situation to political gamesmanship.
  • The shutdown, now in its third week, has left many TSA staff and air traffic controllers working without pay, contributing to staffing strains and delays reported by the industry.
