Mainz's Under-23 coach, Jan Siewert, will replace Svensson and confront the immediate challenge of reversing the team's fortunes in a forthcoming home Bundesliga match against Leipzig.
The decision for Svensson, a former Denmark defender who played for Mainz from 2007 through 2014, to step down followed a meeting with club officials. Both parties agreed it was best for the club to go a different way.
