Maintenance Mishap Floods Bautzen Theatre’s Main Stage, Shows Canceled Through Jan. 20

The smaller Burgtheater continues its program unaffected.

Overview

  • About 6,000 liters of water poured onto the Großes Haus stage when the spray-flood system was accidentally triggered during fire-alarm maintenance.
  • Technicians halted the flow within minutes, but the stage, orchestra pit, understage areas and ancillary rooms were already inundated.
  • Staff and firefighters pumped out water as external firms deployed drying equipment, and insurers and specialists began documenting the damage.
  • Lighting and stage machinery were particularly exposed to water and are being tested, and it remains unclear whether the wooden stage floor must be replaced or when full operations can resume.
  • All performances in the large house are canceled through Tuesday, January 20, and local authorities and insurers have been notified as recovery work continues.
