Maine Man Pleads Guilty to New Year’s Eve Times Square Machete Attack

Trevor Bickford, radicalized by extremist Islamic ideology, faces up to 120 years in prison for his jihadist attack on NYPD officers.

  • Trevor Bickford, 20, of Wells, Maine, has pleaded guilty to three counts of attempted murder and three counts of assault of officers and employees of the U.S. government, following his machete attack on three NYPD officers in Times Square on New Year's Eve 2022.
  • Bickford, who targeted the iconic yearly celebration to carry out acts of violence and hatred in the name of jihad, faces up to 120 years in prison.
  • Prosecutors said Bickford had become radicalized over the summer of 2022, consuming Islamist propaganda that included the teachings of a “spiritual mentor” of al Qaeda.
  • Bickford had initially planned to travel overseas to support the Taliban in Afghanistan or elsewhere, but instead decided to carry out his attack in the U.S.
  • Bickford's sentencing hearing has been scheduled for April 11, 2024.
