MAIB Probes Fatal Lift-Shaft Accident Aboard P&O’s Arvia

The ship resumed its transatlantic itinerary after an unplanned call in A Coruña, Spain.

  • A P&O Cruises spokesperson confirmed a crew member died on Oct. 26 following an onboard accident early in a 14-night voyage from Southampton to Barbados.
  • The Port of A Coruña said Arvia docked from about 3 p.m. until night on Oct. 26 before departing for Tenerife.
  • The Marine Accident Investigation Branch will board at the next port to begin a preliminary assessment at the request of the Bermuda Ship Registry.
  • The MAIB has confirmed it is investigating the case as an accident in a lift shaft, with full circumstances yet to be detailed.
  • Arvia departed Oct. 24 and is scheduled to arrive in Bridgetown on Nov. 7, and P&O said it is providing support to the crew member’s family and colleagues.
