Mahfuz Alam Breaks With NCP Over Jamaat Alliance, Deepening Party Rift

The student-led party says the pact is a tactical seat-sharing deal ahead of the February 12 election.

Overview

  • NCP convenor Nahid Islam confirmed the party has joined a Jamaat-e-Islami–led bloc and finalized seat sharing for the 2026 polls.
  • Mahfuz Alam, a leading figure of the July 2024 uprising and former interim adviser, said he will not be part of "this NCP" under the current circumstances.
  • Alam also denied receiving any proposal to run as a candidate for the Jamaat–NCP alliance.
  • Thirty senior NCP leaders submitted a memorandum opposing the tie-up, citing Jamaat’s contested 1971 role as incompatible with the party’s values.
  • Senior figures Tasnim Jara and Tajnuva Jabeen resigned in protest, while Islam described the alliance as a non-ideological electoral arrangement decided by a party majority.
