Maharashtra’s Road Deaths Near 96,000 Since 2019 as New Data Shows No Relief

Fresh transport-department figures underscore persistent enforcement gaps.

Overview

  • The state logged 219,039 crashes from January 2019 to September 2025, causing 95,722 deaths, 129,670 serious injuries and 53,036 minor injuries.
  • In January–September 2025 there were 26,922 accidents and 11,532 fatalities, slightly more crashes and marginally fewer deaths than the same period in 2024.
  • District-level surges this year include a 37% jump in accidents in Washim and sharp increases in deaths in Buldhana (+59%), Sangli (+54%) and Solapur city (+50%).
  • Mumbai reported the most accidents between January and September 2025 with 1,878, while Nashik Rural had the most deaths at 656.
  • A multi-vehicle fire on the Mumbai–Bengaluru highway in Pune on Thursday killed eight and injured 14, illustrating the ongoing toll.
