Maharashtra Urges Centre to Widen Three Pune Highways for Traffic Relief

It would widen three highway stretches to accommodate peak flows until a planned elevated corridor is completed.

Overview

  • On July 29, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar formally wrote to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari seeking immediate widening of three national highways serving Pune.
  • The request specifies expanding NH-60 (Nashik Phata–Khed) and NH-65 (Hadapsar–Yavat) from four to six lanes and upgrading NH-548D (Talegaon–Chakan–Shikrapur) from two to four lanes.
  • Pawar highlighted that heavy traffic through educational, industrial and residential zones has overwhelmed current road capacity and raised commuter safety risks.
  • State officials noted that vehicular density on these corridors has exceeded permissible limits, making interim lane additions critical.
  • The proposal remains pending approval and funding from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways before any work can begin.
