Maharashtra Unveils Rs1.3 Lakh Crore Mobility Plan to Cut Pune Congestion

Initial funding has been earmarked to clear 35 bottlenecks across the metropolitan region ahead of major infrastructure works

Overview

  • The 30-year Comprehensive Mobility Plan spans 2,200 sq km of the Pune Metropolitan Region and aims to boost average travel speeds from 12 kmph to 30 kmph by December 2026.
  • Phase I has secured Rs 62,000 crore out of the total Rs 1.3 lakh crore budget to kick off infrastructure upgrades across Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad.
  • Short-term interventions approved include the removal of 35 critical traffic choke points, construction of missing link roads and deployment of area traffic management systems at 503 junctions.
  • Roles and responsibilities for the Maharashtra State Government, Pune Municipal Corporation, PCMC, PMRDA and PMPML have been defined to ensure all future transport projects align with the plan.
  • The blueprint also includes new ring roads, an underground tunnel network and a potential extension of the Hadapsar metro line to Uruli Kanchan.
