Maharashtra Tops NITI Aayog’s 2024 Export Preparedness Index

The revamped 70‑indicator benchmark reframes state rankings as a district-focused policy guide to scale merchandise exports.

Overview

  • Maharashtra leads the large states, followed by Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, with scores of 68.01, 64.41 and 64.02 as Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh complete the top five.
  • Among small states, North-Eastern states and Union Territories, Uttarakhand ranks first, ahead of Jammu & Kashmir and Nagaland.
  • EPI 2024 assesses 70 indicators across four pillars, weighting Business Ecosystem at 40% and Export Infrastructure, Policy & Governance and Export Performance at 20% each.
  • NITI Aayog says the methodology was reworked with five added dimensions—macroeconomic stability, human capital, MSME ecosystem, access to finance and cost competitiveness—so results are not directly comparable with 2022.
  • Uttar Pradesh places fourth with a 62.09 score and FY24 exports of about Rs 1.72 lakh crore, highlighting gains by a landlocked state across electronics, leather, agri-food and textiles.
