Maharashtra to Introduce Stringent Anti-Conversion Law and Cancel SC Certificates

Guided by a DGP-led panel, the upcoming winter session bill will draw on the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita to target fraudulent conversions, stripping caste certificates from ineligible converts.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the state received a DGP-headed inquiry report and will draft a tougher anti-conversion law for the winter session.
  • The proposed legislation will criminalise conversions by force, cheating or inducement with penalties under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
  • In line with the Supreme Court’s November 2024 ruling, Maharashtra will revoke Scheduled Caste certificates and recover benefits from those who converted to non-eligible religions.
  • Officials stressed that voluntary and consensual religious conversions will remain lawful and are explicitly protected.
  • BJP lawmakers cited alleged misuse of SC reservations by “crypto Christians” and detailed reported cases of coercive conversions in vulnerable communities.
