Maharashtra Threatens Ola, Uber, Rapido With Permit Cancellation Over Fare Non-Compliance

Transport authorities begin fines, FIRs to enforce state-approved rates not yet reflected in aggregator apps.

Overview

  • The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority reaffirmed rules that cap surge at 1.5 times the base fare, set a 25% floor during low demand, and require platforms to pass at least 80% of fares to drivers.
  • Government-notified base rates apply to app taxis until the new policy is issued: Rs 20.66 per km for non-AC cabs and Rs 22.72 per km for AC Cool Cabs.
  • The Transport Department launched a special enforcement drive, issuing nearly Rs 3.90 lakh in penalties to over 250 vehicles and registering FIRs at Matunga, Santacruz and Andheri police stations.
  • Officials cited earlier action against 7,152 auto-rickshaw and taxi permit holders with Rs 1.60 crore recovered, signaling sustained enforcement against fare and permit violations.
  • Aggregators have not updated their apps to the revised fares, leading to arbitrary charges and disputes, while driver unions push for stricter action and propose higher base fares for different car categories.
