Maharashtra Sets Phased Minimum Ages and Will Require Six-Year-Olds for Class 1 by 2030

The state says the change aligns admissions with the National Education Policy 2020.

Overview

  • The government resolution, issued Thursday, lays out a phased schedule that starts with a three-year minimum for nursery in 2027-28 and rises to a six-year minimum for Class 1 in 2030-31.
  • Under the new rules children must meet the required age by June 30 of the relevant year to be eligible for admission.
  • The resolution exempts children already enrolled in nursery through Class 1 in the 2026-27 year and students who are regularly promoted from a recognised school.
  • School heads may grant a limited flexibility of up to 15 days' relaxation in minimum or maximum age for admissions from nursery to Class 1.
  • The Directorate of Primary Education in Pune must issue detailed implementation guidelines and operational rules that will determine how schools apply the new age limits.
