Maharashtra Sets Nov. 17–Dec. 2 Leprosy Door-to-Door Screening With 65,832 Teams

New notifiable-disease rules tighten reporting to support rapid diagnosis.

Overview

  • The statewide Leprosy Case Detection Campaign will run from November 17 to December 2 to find hidden cases through house-to-house screening across all districts, covering 8.66 crore people and 1.73 crore households.
  • A total of 65,832 two-person teams and 13,166 supervisors have been deployed to work 14 consecutive days under standardized procedures.
  • Teams will visit 20 homes daily in rural areas and 25–30 in urban areas; suspected patients will be examined by medical officers and started immediately on free multi-drug therapy if diagnosed.
  • Leprosy has been declared a notifiable disease in Maharashtra, requiring doctors and health facilities to report each confirmed case to district and state health authorities within two weeks.
  • Preparations included a November 14 state committee review led by Dr Kadambari Balkawade and directives to district administrations from Minister Prakash Abitkar and Principal Secretary Dr Nipun Vinayak, aligning with the goal of zero transmission by 2027.
