Maharashtra Sends Major Mumbai Slum Clusters for Redevelopment Approval
The SRA has referred proposals to the state High-Powered Committee as a Reliance-led win for the Andheri pilot awaits final government sign-off.
Overview
- The Slum Rehabilitation Authority has submitted proposals for large cluster sites including Antop Hill, Majaswadi and Behrambaug to the state High-Powered Committee for formal approval, and has shortlisted about 18 clusters across Mumbai for detailed planning.
- The 101.36-acre Juhu Galli (Andheri West) pilot drew major developer interest, with Reliance 4IR Realty Development Ltd emerging as the highest-ranked bidder and the developer appointment now pending final state clearance.
- Under the cluster model, contiguous slum pockets are treated as integrated redevelopment zones that must deliver rehabilitation homes for eligible slum dwellers while developers pay land premiums and retain saleable units to fund projects.
- The three flagship plots together span more than 850 acres and could affect tens of thousands of homes; the state says the broader programme aims to provide permanent housing to roughly 600,000–700,000 residents and replan infrastructure.
- Before work can begin, officials must complete boundary demarcation, master planning and multiple clearances from the High-Powered Committee and the state, and successful delivery will depend on tight coordination between the SRA, developers and residents for rehousing and civic upgrades.
