Maharashtra Self-Funds Jal Jeevan Mission After Central Funds Halted

  • Maharashtra has not received any central JJM funds since October 2024, prompting it to finance the mission with state resources.
  • The government has released Rs 2,483.58 crore to complete 26,009 ongoing schemes across rural districts.
  • It has earmarked an additional Rs 3,913 crore for 2025–26 to prevent work stoppages on tap connection projects.
  • Progress has been hampered by land acquisition challenges, local opposition, interdepartmental permission delays, contractor setbacks and water source failures.
  • So far, Maharashtra has sanctioned 51,558 schemes, spent around Rs 31,374 crore and boosted rural household tap coverage from 33% to 88.36%.
