Maharashtra Seeks Suspension of Faceless Learner’s Licence System After Security Lapses

An expert panel will now chart technical fixes with tests restricted to supervised RTO centres.

Overview

  • The transport department has formally asked the National Informatics Centre to temporarily halt the online learner’s licence service.
  • Field inspections reported Aadhaar data manipulation and a bypassable NIC safeguard that could let proxies clear the learner’s test.
  • Officials warned of risks including large-scale fake licences, threats to road safety and national security, and violations of the Motor Vehicles, IT and Aadhaar laws.
  • Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik cited instances of newly turned 18-year-olds driving without required supervision, including cases linked to reckless and drunk driving.
  • An expert committee led by Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar has been set up, and the state will examine third‑party testing models used by some states as others continue RTO-only testing.
