Maharashtra Seeks Supreme Court Review to Bring Elephant Mahadevi Back

Vantara will provide veterinary treatment with technical support for her return subject to the court’s approval

Overview

  • The Maharashtra government finalised a review petition to the Supreme Court on August 8 seeking Mahadevi’s transfer from Vantara’s Jamnagar facility back to Kolhapur’s Nandani Math.
  • Vantara, acting as the court-appointed sanctuary for Mahadevi’s medical rehabilitation, has pledged to back the legal challenge with veterinary care, technical assistance and safe transport once authorised.
  • The centre has proposed a satellite rehabilitation facility near Nandani Math featuring a hydrotherapy pond, laser therapy room, 24/7 veterinary clinic, open-habitat area and sand pit.
  • Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis met with Vantara officials who reiterated that they complied solely with Supreme Court orders and do not intend permanent custody of the elephant.
  • Silent marches, petitions signed by more than 125,000 residents and boycotts of Reliance/Jio products in Kolhapur highlighted Mahadevi’s deep cultural and religious importance.
