Maharashtra Rolls Out 24/7 Helpline and Watch Towers to Address Rising Wildlife and Human Fatalities

Officials disclosed first-quarter 2025 mortality figures for tigers, leopards, other wildlife and humans with activation of helpline 1926, informer squads, watch towers and Special Tiger Protection Force units under the 2023 compensation act.

Overview

  • Between January and April 2025, Maharashtra recorded the deaths of 22 tigers, 40 leopards and 61 other wild animals alongside 21 human fatalities.
  • Natural causes, electrocution and accidents on roads, railways and in wells accounted for the majority of tiger and leopard deaths, with poaching linked to three leopard and four other wildlife fatalities.
  • The state launched helpline 1926 to enable public reporting of poaching incidents and formed informer squads in sensitive areas to relay real-time intelligence to forest officials.
  • High-rise watch towers, wireless surveillance systems, cyber cell operations and Special Tiger Protection Force deployments have been activated to monitor wildlife movements and deter illegal activity.
  • The Maharashtra Compensation for Loss, Injury or Damage caused by Wild Animals Act, 2023, has been enforced to ensure timely reparations for victims of human-wildlife conflicts.
