Maharashtra Records 24 New COVID-19 Cases Driven by Omicron Subvariants

Officials have linked the uptick to emerging Omicron subvariants that the WHO is monitoring.

Overview

  • Seven of the new cases were recorded in Mumbai, bringing Maharashtra’s active tally to 188 and its cumulative infections since January to 2,449.
  • Maharashtra has reported 36 fatalities this year, with 35 of those who died having underlying comorbidities.
  • The recovery rate stands at 86.11 percent and most patients continue to exhibit only mild symptoms.
  • The WHO has designated Omicron subvariants LF.7, XFG, JN.1 and NB.1.8.1 as Variants Under Monitoring in response to the uptick.
  • The state health department has conducted 27,394 tests in 2025 and directed public hospitals to sustain testing and treatment services, maintain ILI/SARI surveillance and sequence all positive samples.
