Maharashtra Raises Additional Power Tax on Commercial, Industrial Users to 20.94 Paise for Solar Pumps

The increase is intended to close a multithousand-crore gap to complete PM-KUSUM pump installations by March 2026.

Overview

  • The Cabinet approved a 9.90 paise-per-unit hike in the levy, taking the charge from 11.04 paise to 20.94 paise on power sold to business consumers and through Mahavitaran.
  • Revenue from the higher charge will be ring‑fenced for PM-KUSUM to expand daytime solar irrigation pumps for farmers.
  • The government statement pegged annual mobilisation at about ₹1,764 crore, while an official told Hindustan Times the hike would add roughly ₹834 crore a year for two years on top of existing receipts.
  • Officials report 4,23,510 pumps installed with 1,26,490 pending, and the state estimates a funding need of about ₹3,591.38 crore to finish the rollout.
  • Electricity expert Ashok Pendse called the burden on commercial and industrial users unfair, and another analyst estimated roughly a 1% rise in industrial power bills.
