Maharashtra Orders AI Platform and Algorithm Audits for App Taxi Firms

The move is meant to give regulators real-time access to driver and vehicle records to improve safety, spot allocation bias, and protect independent drivers.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday directed the state transport department to build an AI-integrated digital platform to monitor app-based taxi aggregators and their vehicles.
  • Officials were told the system must hold full digital records for every aggregator vehicle and driver, including registration, parking locations, licences, police verifications and shift-by-shift logs that can be accessed immediately after an incident.
  • Fadnavis ordered audits of ride-allocation algorithms to detect unfair treatment and stressed independent drivers must receive equal trip opportunities after presentations alleged preferential routing for large fleets such as Everest Fleets, Move Fleet and Carrum Fleet.
  • Reporting notes that no implementation timeline, technical design details, data-privacy safeguards or enforcement mechanisms have been published yet, leaving questions about how audits and real-time oversight will be carried out.
  • The directive updates the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Aggregator Rules, 2026 process and could affect drivers, aggregators and passengers by changing how trips are assigned, how penalties are enforced, and what data platforms must share with regulators.
