Maharashtra Opposes Abu Salem's 14-Day Parole Over Absconding Risk and Extradition Obligations

The Bombay High Court scheduled a January 28 hearing following a CBI request to join the case.

Overview

  • The state filed an affidavit saying Salem could abscond if released, jeopardizing assurances given to Portugal at the time of his 2005 extradition.
  • Prison authorities said, at most, he could receive two days of emergency parole with police escort to visit Saraimir in Uttar Pradesh.
  • The affidavit described Salem as an international gangster and cited his flight from India after the 1993 Mumbai blasts.
  • The Uttar Pradesh Police submitted an adverse report calling Saraimir a communally sensitive area, which led to rejection of his 14-day request on November 20, 2025.
  • The CBI sought to be impleaded and warned that granting parole or bail could trigger law-and-order problems, with the bench led by Justices Ajey Gadkari and Shyam Chandak to hear the matter next week.
