Overview
- The state opened Model SROs in Mumbai (BKC), Navi Mumbai (Mahape) and Nagpur this Thursday and Friday as part of a phased programme that began with a pilot in Pune.
- The centres operate from 10:00 to 18:00 and use digital systems, trained service staff and organised lounges to speed up registration of sale deeds, leases, wills and other property documents.
- Citizens can choose the Model SROs as an optional service by paying a reported Rs 5,500 fee per registration while regular government SROs remain free to use.
- Under a five‑year IGR contract, the VFS Global–WE Excel consortium will set up 60 centres in phases, with each Model SRO staffed by one government Sub‑Registrar and one senior clerk and remaining personnel supplied by the private operator.
- Officials say the programme aims to cut delays and increase transparency, with same‑day or faster processing possible at Model SROs and further expansion and government staff transfers or recruitment planned next.
