Maharashtra narrows Eid al-Adha livestock ban to cows, bullocks and bulls

Authorities modernised Mumbai’s Deonar abattoir with extra security following the arrival of more than 1.5 lakh animals for Eid al-Adha.

Overview

  • Maharashtra Goseva Ayog’s initial order to close all livestock markets from June 3–8 was reversed when new directives restricted closures to markets selling indigenous cattle.
  • Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis chaired a law and order meeting to review festival preparations and affirmed that administrative plans are in place.
  • Over 1.5 lakh animals, including goats and about 8,000 buffaloes, have already arrived at Asia’s largest Deonar abattoir ahead of Eid rituals.
  • The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation erected shelters at Deonar, deployed more than 500 security and sanitation personnel, and implemented a QR-based system to manage traders and animals.
  • Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury urged peaceful Eid celebrations and warned against any attempts to spread communal hatred.
