Overview
- The Maharashtra School Education Department issued a June 18 government resolution making Hindi the “general” third language for Classes 1 to 5 in Marathi and English medium schools.
- Students can opt out of Hindi to study any other Indian language provided at least 20 students per grade request it and a teacher is arranged in-person or online.
- Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis affirmed that the Hindi requirement has been lifted and described the adjustment as aligning with NEP 2020’s emphasis on multilingual education.
- Opposition leaders including Harshwardhan Sapkal of Congress and Raj Thackeray of MNS condemned the order as a backdoor imposition of Hindi and a betrayal of Marathi speakers.
- Language advocates warn that the 20-student threshold and online-only teaching for alternatives will deter schools from offering other languages and weaken Marathi heritage.
