Maharashtra Mandates Solar for Government Offices and Unveils Net-Zero MEDA Headquarters
The state aims to power public buildings with solar by December 2025 as part of Asia’s largest decentralized solar project to shift 16,000 megawatts by 2026

- The new MEDA headquarters in Pune is built to Super ECBC and net-zero energy standards with features such as Porotherm blocks, double-glazed windows and a 290 kW grid-connected solar plant.
- Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that all government offices will be powered by solar energy by December 2025.
- Under the Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar Yojana, households using up to 100 units will shift to solar in the first phase, followed by those using up to 300 units, aiming to eliminate electricity bills for low-consumption users.
- The state has installed more than 500,000 solar agricultural pumps and will supply solar power to feeder lines with a combined capacity of 16,000 MW by 2026, marking Asia’s largest decentralized solar initiative.
- Maharashtra plans to generate 52 percent of its electricity from renewables by 2030 and has signed an agreement with a Russian government-owned company to develop thorium-based energy technology.
