Maharashtra Mandates Housing-Society Consent for Liquor Shops Statewide

The excise minister’s order turns an earlier proposal into a uniform rule after licence complaints reached the Assembly.

Overview

  • During Question Hour, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar said shops selling IMFL or country liquor must obtain consent from registered housing societies before operating on society premises.
  • Pawar directed uniform enforcement across the state and told the House that action has been taken in two cases where complaints were filed.
  • BJP MLA Shankar Jagtap alleged the Vikrant Wine outlet in Sahyadri Society, Chinchwad, began operating on incomplete permissions and documents, and sought cancellations.
  • The move builds on Pawar’s March indication that housing-society NOCs would be required for vends shifting into society complexes, clarifying licensing compliance for commercial spaces in such buildings.
  • Separately, Deputy CM Eknath Shinde reported more than 30 lakh dog-bite cases over six years and said local bodies are intensifying animal birth control and anti-rabies vaccination under existing rules and court directions.
