Overview
- On July 4, Maharashtra notified the Bike-Taxi Rules, 2025, legalizing app-based electric bike taxi operations with licences valid for five years.
- Aggregators must register a minimum fleet of 50 electric two-wheelers in the state and pay ₹1 lakh in licence fees plus a ₹5 lakh security deposit.
- The rules require yellow reflective paint on each bike, sanitised passenger helmets, GPS tracking, panic buttons, a 24/7 control room and prohibition of street hailing.
- Drivers aged 20–50 must hold a commercial licence and PSV badge, pass police verification, undergo periodic health checks and have no DUI convictions in the past seven years.
- Platforms such as Uber and Rapido are finalizing registrations and fleet preparations to begin licensed bike-taxi services by the end of July.
