Maharashtra Launches Ward Delimitation Process for 29 Civic Bodies

Municipal commissioners and district collectors have until late July to draft new ward maps under a Supreme Court deadline with OBC quotas reinstated.

Overview

  • The Urban Development Department issued notifications on June 10–11 to begin ward formation in 29 municipal corporations, all currently under administrators’ rule.
  • Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will retain its existing 227 single-member wards, while all other corporations will adopt a four-member ward system.
  • Delimitation duties are assigned to municipal commissioners in A, B and C class corporations and to district collectors in D class, with draft boundaries opened for public suggestions and objections.
  • A May 6 Supreme Court order requires the State Election Commission to notify local body elections within four weeks and complete them within four months, and reinstates OBC reservation levels to pre-2022 percentages.
  • The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance of BJP, Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Pawar’s NCP confirmed joint contests with provisions for friendly fights, and Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena has named 12 candidates for the BMC polls.
