Maharashtra Launches Statewide Mechanised Hospital Linen Service Across 593 Government Facilities

Officials tout barrier-washing plus color-coded rotation to cut infection risk, standardize hygiene statewide.

Overview

  • Health Minister Prakash Abitkar inaugurated the service at Arogya Bhavan in Mumbai on Wednesday.
  • The rollout covers 593 institutions — 20 district, 8 general, 105 sub-district, 378 rural, 22 women’s and 60 trauma care hospitals — accounting for about 29,315 beds.
  • Outsourced private agencies will handle collection, sorting, washing, sterilisation and distribution through fully automated barrier-washing systems that minimize human contact.
  • The program includes linens such as bed sheets, blankets, pillow covers, patient and staff uniforms, towels and curtains.
  • A color-coded bed-sheet schedule — white on Mondays and Thursdays, green on Tuesdays and Fridays, pink on Wednesdays and Saturdays — is intended to support consistent infection-control practices.
