Maharashtra Launches River Rejuvenation Authority to Tackle Pollution

It will combine regulatory, academic, technical expertise under a MPCB-backed secretariat to fast-track river basin plans.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will chair the MSRRA, with Environment Minister Pankaja Munde as vice-chair.
  • A state-level executive committee led by Munde includes technical experts, legal and financial advisors, MPCB representatives and IIT specialists.
  • A dedicated secretariat headed by the MPCB member secretary will oversee the authority’s day-to-day operations.
  • MSRRA will prepare and approve detailed project reports, oversee river basin development plans and recommend projects under national schemes.
  • A CPCB survey found 55 polluted rivers in Maharashtra and revealed that almost half of the state’s daily sewage output enters waterways untreated.
