Maharashtra Launches Pilot 'Smart Intelligent' Village, Targets 3,500 in First Phase

The state will test 18 digital services in Satnavari as a template for a first‑phase expansion to roughly 3,500 villages.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated Satnavari in Nagpur district as India’s first pilot “smart intelligent” village.
  • The initiative will roll out 18 use cases across agriculture, health, education and governance, including smart irrigation, drone spraying, telemedicine and AI‑enabled learning.
  • Initial deployments in the village include a pond sensor for water‑quality alerts, smart street lighting and CCTV‑based surveillance, with additional services being introduced in stages.
  • The pilot builds on BharatNet and the state’s MahaNet connectivity and is being executed with a 24‑company Indian tech consortium under the VoICE umbrella.
  • The government plans at least 10 such villages in every tehsil, about 3,500 in the first phase, while most interventions are still in early deployment with outcomes yet to be reported.
