Maharashtra Launches Heritage Conservation Drive With Fixed Targets and March 2026 Pilot

The Archaeology Department will lead with MITRA under a funding mix using PPP models, state budgets or multilateral loans.

Overview

  • The state set targets to conserve 500 temples, 60 state-protected forts and 1,800 stepwells, with 350 non-protected forts to be covered.
  • District-level integrated master plans were cleared for Pune, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Nashik, with new Destination Management Organisations to follow.
  • A Project Implementation Unit will be created, four contractual officers will be hired through open advertisement and the implementing committee will be formalised by December 15.
  • Financing will draw on PPP models, government allocations and, if required, World Bank or ADB lending, with MITRA preparing the funding roadmap.
  • A pilot phase will begin by March 2026 at 15 sites—five stepwells, five temples and five forts—under a destination management approach, with multidisciplinary experts engaged.
