Maharashtra Launches First 40-Metre Full-Span Girder for Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train

The shift to full-span girder construction is intended to accelerate viaduct building across the state's 135-kilometre elevated stretch.

Overview

  • NHSRCL installed the first 40-metre pre-stressed concrete box girder in Maharashtra on 6 September at Sakhare village in Dahanu using a full span launching gantry.
  • Plans call for 2,575 such girders along the 135 km elevated section between Shilphata and the Gujarat border within the state's 156 km corridor.
  • Each full-span girder weighs about 970 tonnes and is cast as a single unit with roughly 390 cubic metres of concrete and 42 tonnes of steel.
  • Thirteen casting yards are planned in Maharashtra to feed the rollout, with five already operational to maintain continuous girder supply.
  • Officials say Maharashtra becomes the second state after Gujarat to deploy this method, which has been used there since 2021 and enabled substantial viaduct completion.
