Overview
- On July 16, the Bombay High Court dismissed a public interest litigation against Prada’s sandal designs, ruling that only registered GI holders can initiate legal action.
- Sant Rohidas Leather Industries and Charmakar Development Corporation (LIDCOM) in Maharashtra and Dr. Babu Jagjivan Ram Leather Industries Development Corporation (LIDKAR) in Karnataka hold the exclusive GI registration for Kolhapuri chappals.
- In their joint statement, LIDCOM and LIDKAR affirmed that no individual or organisation other than themselves is authorised to negotiate or represent Kolhapuri chappal GI matters with international brands.
- The dispute began in June when Prada showcased sandals resembling GI-protected Kolhapuri chappals in its Spring/Summer 2026 men’s collection without consulting the registered holders.
- Both corporations emphasised that enforcing GI protections is integral to preserving centuries-old craftsmanship and safeguarding the livelihoods of thousands of local leather artisans.
