Maharashtra Issues Notice to Rezone Wadala Salt Pans for IAS Gymkhana, EVM Warehouse

A one-month objection window under MRTP Section 37(1AA) precedes the state’s decision on deleting the Natural Area designation.

Overview

  • The Urban Development Department’s September 5 notification proposes shifting two Wadala salt-pan parcels from Natural Area to the Residential Zone for public-use facilities.
  • C.S. No. 4 (6,475 sq m) is proposed for an EVM and VVPAT warehouse, while C.S. No. 5 (13,843.82 sq m) is designated for a Civil Services Institute gymkhana.
  • The move follows a March 2024 cabinet decision, an October 2024 collector’s recommendation, and a March 10, 2025 MCGM report supporting the change.
  • Officials note the plots lack mangroves or hills and have temporary MMRCL use and some existing structures cited as rationale for de-reservation.
  • Environmentalists, including Zoru Bathena, object to losing salt-pan Natural Areas, and the government will decide after the public hearing and a deputy director’s report.
