Overview

  • The Maharashtra government announced formation of a 12-member task force on June 10 to create an integrated public transport plan for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region under NITI Aayog’s Growth Hub pilot.
  • The panel is led by the general manager of the BEST Undertaking and includes civic commissioners from nine municipal corporations along with representatives from the BMC and MMRDA.
  • Its primary mandate is to unify fragmented municipal bus services into a seamless network offering commuters a single-ticket experience across all MMR bus operators.
  • Task force members will prepare a roadmap to expand the single-ticketing system beyond buses to the suburban rail network, metro and mono rail services.
  • This transport integration initiative aligns with the broader MMR Economic Master Plan aimed at attracting investment, reducing congestion and boosting transit efficiency in one of India’s largest urban hubs.
