Maharashtra FDA Launches Statewide Festive Food-Safety Drive, Reports 11 Unsafe Samples So Far

Expanded laboratory capacity, fresh hires, dedicated funding bolster enforcement.

  • Under the 'San Maharashtra Cha — Sankalp Ann Surakshecha' campaign, officials have inspected 1,594 establishments and collected 2,369 food samples across the state.
  • Testing has been completed on 554 samples, finding 513 standard, 26 substandard, four with labelling defects and 11 unsafe, with results for 1,815 samples still pending.
  • Recruitment since 2022 has filled more than 200 Assistant Commissioner (Food) and Food Safety Officer posts, and a proposal to create 750 additional FDA positions has been sent to the finance department.
  • New food-testing laboratories in Nagpur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Pune are ready for inauguration, backed by Rs 200 crore sanctioned for lab infrastructure and a proposal for 250 more staff.
  • Authorities said milk adulteration checks will be expanded and warned pharmacies to apply GST-driven price reductions or face strict action.
