Maharashtra Extends UttanVirar Sea Link to Vadhavan Port, Approves Cheaper Six-Lane Design

The approvals reflect a push to decongest overloaded corridors via coastal expansion, tunnelling, firm deadlines, cost rationalisation.

  • The cabinet infrastructure committee cleared the UttanVirar Sea Link’s extension to Vadhavan Port, defining a 55.12 km project with a 24.35 km main bridge and approach roads from Uttan (9.32 km), Vasai (2.5 km) and Virar (18.95 km).
  • A revised design reducing the sea link from eight to six lanes won approval, with officials projecting savings of over ₹30,000 crore and updated connections including a Virar link to the Delhi–Vadodara–Mumbai Expressway.
  • MMRDA’s proposed 70 km tunnel network advanced to procurement, with bids due November 6 for a consultant to deliver feasibility and a DPR for the 16 km Phase 1 linking Worli’s Coastal Road end to BKC and the airport, with a spur to the BKC bullet train station.
  • Construction on the 11.8 km ThaneBorivali twin tunnel progressed as Thane-side shaft excavation neared completion, TBM assembly moved ahead and the authority reiterated an expected cut in travel time to about 15 minutes.
