Overview
- The Maharashtra government formalised the task force on Thursday, October 15, 2026, by issuing a Government Resolution that creates a cross-agency panel to draft an integrated transit framework.
- The panel has a six-month deadline to produce an evidence-based policy and planning framework that will assess feasibility, suitability and economic viability of suburban rail, metro corridors, Regional Rapid Transit Systems and possible semi-high-speed links.
- The task force will be chaired by the Chairman and Managing Director of the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation, with MRVC’s Chief Manager (Planning) as member secretary and officials from Maha-Metro, MMRCL, MMRDA and the state Urban Development Department as members.
- Mandated recommendations are intended to guide and coordinate future project planning and station/first-last-mile integration across agencies rather than to grant final approvals for individual projects.
- The effort responds to heavy capacity pressure on Mumbai’s transport network — including a roughly 435 km suburban rail grid carrying millions daily and about 80 km of metro in operation — and could change how projects are prioritised, funded and staged across Mumbai and other Maharashtra cities.
