Maharashtra Ends Rallies Before Civic Polls, Permits Tightly Limited Door-to-Door Outreach

Officials say a 2012 order allows tightly controlled house visits.

Overview

  • Public rallies, processions and loudspeakers are banned 48 hours before the January 15 voting across 29 municipal corporations, including Mumbai.
  • Candidates may visit voters on January 13–14 only outside a 100-metre polling radius, without microphones, and in groups of no more than five including the candidate.
  • The State Election Commissioner warned that distributing cash or gifts is a criminal offence and said enforcement teams are monitoring violations.
  • A preliminary review of claims that Speaker Rahul Narwekar blocked Opposition nominations in Colaba found no wrongdoing by officials, with additional footage requested to conclude the inquiry.
  • The commission has sought a report from Municipal Commissioner Abhinav Goel on a video alleging cash distribution in Kalyan-Dombivli’s Ward-29 and has withheld certification in some unopposed wins pending verification of voluntary withdrawals.
