Maharashtra Doctors Launch Statewide Strike Over Phaltan Doctor’s Death, Demand Independent SIT

More than 20,000 resident doctors suspended non-emergency services to press for a probe led by a retired judge.

Overview

  • Non-emergency OPDs and elective services at government medical colleges and several hospitals were suspended, while emergency, casualty and ICU care continued.
  • Doctors’ bodies sought transfer of the case to an independent SIT headed by a retired judge, even as the state ordered an SIT under a woman IPS officer that critics say remains incomplete.
  • NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule met the family in Beed, urged CM Devendra Fadnavis to withhold any clean chit, and questioned alleged leaks of the doctor’s call records.
  • The Maharashtra State Gazetted Officers’ Federation warned of protests if action is not taken within 10 days and asked for a fast-track trial and security for medical staff and the family.
  • Candlelight marches and hospital demonstrations were held in multiple cities, with unions planning a full withdrawal of services from November 14 if demands are unmet; the two accused have been arrested.
