Maharashtra Cyber Cell Files Case Against Wikipedia Editors Over Sambhaji Maharaj Edits

The Maharashtra Cyber Cell has filed a case against four to five Wikipedia editors under Sections 69 and 79 of the IT Act for not removing disputed content about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
The content in question includes historically inaccurate and allegedly defamatory claims about Sambhaji Maharaj, which authorities fear could incite unrest among his followers.
Despite receiving over 10 emails and legal notices from the Cyber Cell, the Wikimedia Foundation did not take action or respond beyond automatic replies.
The controversy emerged following the release of the Bollywood film 'Chhaava,' which depicts the life of Sambhaji Maharaj, with concerns raised by various organizations over the potential for social unrest.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed the Cyber Cell to investigate and emphasized that historical distortions on open-source platforms would not be tolerated.
