Overview

  • The 12-member high-level committee is chaired by Chief Secretary Rajesh Kumar Meena and includes senior officials from general administration, urban development, transport, industry, the transport commissioner and both city and suburban collectors.
  • The committee’s mandate is to evaluate adjusted start and end times for government offices in Mumbai city and its suburban districts to alleviate morning and evening peak-hour congestion.
  • It is empowered to invite employee union representatives as needed and is expected to submit detailed recommendations by mid-October.
  • The move responds to chronic overcrowding on suburban rails that carry over 3.5 million daily commuters and follows a fatal June 9 accident near Mumbra station involving overcrowded trains.
  • These scheduling proposals will complement ongoing upgrades such as improved signalling, additional train services and exploration of alternative transit modes.
